Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 Test: Accessible video editingPublished on
While Adobe’s software, and in particular Adobe Premiere, are references in the professional world, the publisher is not forgetting the general public and continues to update its Elements range. Premiere’s little brother, Adobe Premiere Elements has been released in 2020 version and, on paper, the new features look numerous and interesting. This is precisely what we will check with our test of the program.
Installing and discovering Adobe Premiere Elements 2020
Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 is a video editing software designed for beginners. The publisher designed its program with care to provide tools to support users in the event that they are unfamiliar with this type of software.
A 30-day trial version is available and requires an Adobe account to recover the installer. Once identified, the procedure is finally quite fast. Note that the installation file weighs a little more than 3 GB and that it is necessary to have a machine equipped with either Windows 8.1 or more recent (Windows 7 is left on the tile) or macOS 10.12 or more recent on the Apple side.
At the first opening, we arrive on a window which provides links to discover the new features of the software but also to learn how to perform certain actions. To launch Adobe Premiere Elements 2020, simply click on “video editor” at the bottom right. We also notice the presence of a link to Adobe Organizer that we will discuss later.
Then, the software offers us three creation modes:
- Fast: it allows you to perform certain actions very quickly, such as cutting a video or combining a few files to create a movie.
- Guided: a series of tutorials to perform specific tasks such as applying a layer or a title.
- Expert: the mode that gives the user the greatest freedom, ideal for those who know a little bit about video editing.
The Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 interface leaves us sceptical. The different grey elements make it difficult to give the programme an elegant and modern look. Moreover, the product interface has hardly evolved for years now. It is time for Adobe to think about a nice graphic redesign for its software.
Perfect communication between the different modes
What is practical with Adobe Premiere Elements is that choosing a specific mode does not force you to do so until the end of the project. Indeed, it is possible to switch from one to the other very easily. You have just added a title and you find that the proposed options are too directive? Switch to expert mode to be able to set everything up as you wish.
Obviously, the goal of the program is to get all users to use the expert mode, which is the one that allows the most things. It also offers a real timeline with a menu of tools that is available on the right of the software interface. There is enough to add titles, transitions, music or effects.
In case of doubt, a click on “guided” gives access to the tutorials. For greater clarity, these are then executed directly in the current project, i.e. you have the instructions to perform the manipulations on your video.
Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 expands its tools
As a new version, Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 offers additions to stimulate user creativity. Among the new features is the noise filter, which reduces the noise of a video captured in low light and slightly improves the final rendering.
Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 also offers a tool that allows you to replace the sky of a photo with a moving sky. What is interesting on paper is much less interesting in practice. Indeed, the software uses the principle of the green background on which it inserts another sky. And for everything to work perfectly, the original sky in the photo must be totally blue. If there is a cloud or clouds in the original image or the sky color is not even, the result will not be satisfactory.
To accommodate videos shot in portrait mode, Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 is able to fill the rest of the screen with a blurred extract of the video. The result is quite effective and avoids the black bars that are added when alternating between landscape and portrait videos.
Adobe also uses Adobe Sensei to provide improved tools through artificial intelligence. It is in the Adobe Organizer image and video manager that it is most visible. So, when you import items into Adobe Organizer, Adobe Sensei will be able to place smart tags to help you find your way around. Photos of nature or animals are classified between them and the search by face is also part of the photos, but also in the videos. In use, the improvements made by Adobe Sensei are very practical, especially if your content collection is rich. In addition, Adobe Organizer regularly offers automatic creations from your library.
With Adobe Premiere Elements 2020, Adobe has clearly identified its audience. Aimed primarily at amateurs, the software continues to take them by the hand with many guides and tutorials that are really well thought out. The various tools are effective and easy to use. We were even surprised at the freedom given to customize a title or effect. The complementarity with Adobe Organizer is obvious and the program is welcome especially if you do not have an image and video manager. If we had to find a downside, we would squint at the interface that is beginning to show the weight of years. This is all the more unfortunate when you compare it with its pro flair (Adobe Premiere) and its much more modern visual.
Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 is available at 99.60€. If you already have an old version of the program, the update is charged at 81.60€.
