OnePlus 7T Test: The real heavyweight in value for money?Published on
5 months after the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, OnePlus is once again titillating the high-end smartphone market. The 7T model, officially unveiled in India on September 26, has features already present on the OnePlus 7 Pro. Was there an interest in releasing such a smartphone a few months after a very good OP7 Pro? This is what we will see in our test.
OnePlus 7T: First impressions
As usual, OnePlus pays particular attention to packaging. The OP7T comes in a much larger red box than the previous models. This case is reminiscent of spirit boxes. The following message is written on it:
“This is the Oneplus 7T. It is the result of all our design and engineering efforts, and designed for those who, like us, are always looking for the best. »
OnePlus announces the color: the OnePlus 7T is not a transition model and is more like a great vintage. Compared to the OnePlus 7, the 7T does less in terms of design sobriety, while the same materials were used. An aesthetic break is triggered with the arrival of a prominent photo module composed of three horizontal sensors and a flash.
This protrusion is not annoying, but we wonder about its ability to resist scratches in the long term, especially if the smartphone is used without a shell.
For our test, we received the Frosted Silver model. It is a matt metallic grey, elegant and pleasant to the touch. OnePlus 7T is also available in another colour called Glacier Blue. The finishes are impeccable and make the smartphone a premium product that aligns with its direct competitors.
On the front panel, the notch of the front camera is still present, but much more discreet. Its size has been reduced by 31% compared to the previous model. As for the 6.55 inch AMOLED display, it says goodbye to 60 Hz. The 90 Hz frame rate has probably become a standard at OnePlus. The OnePlus 7T has the same screen quality as the OnePlus 7 Pro, with the difference that the latter has no notch.
At 190 grams, the OP7T is slightly heavier than its predecessor and borders on the “brick effect” in hand.
In addition to the smartphone, you will find in the box:
- A 30 Watt Warp Charge charger delivering a current of up to 6 amps
- A USB Type-C cable compatible with the Warp Charge
- A tool for inserting SIM cards into the device
- A protective shell made of TPU Gel, flexible and transparent
Our test model is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The smartphone is also available in an 8GB/256GB version.
What is the daily experience?
OnePlus 7T is the brand’s first smartphone running Android 10, so it features the latest improvements in Google’s OS. The first Android 10 Q element that is obvious to us when we get used to it is the navigation by gestures that has been revisited.
On the OnePlus 7T, a mini tutorial is presented, then the navigation system is set by default. This type of navigation can be confusing with such a large smartphone, especially with regard to the “Previous/Return” feature, which changes the shortcut.
To return to the previous page, you must now scan the screen from left to right. The old gesture shortcut located at the bottom right on the old version of Oxygen OS is now used to activate Google Assistant.
If you are not comfortable with this navigation, don’t panic, you can always use the virtual buttons by reactivating them in the device settings.
The other new feature of Oxygen OS is the customization. A new menu allows you to directly modify the various visual elements such as icon packs, their shape, color tones, lock screen and font.
OnePlus 7T also features the “digital well-being and parental control” application already available on Google Pixels. Now, the user can know how long he has spent on each of his applications or how many times they have been launched.
A “Sleep” mode is also integrated. It allows you to activate the “Do Not Disturb” function and automatically adjust the lighting and colours displayed on the screen during times chosen by the user. The Zen mode unveiled at the exit on the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro is still present.
Everyday, Oxygen OS is still as convenient as ever, with its customizable toolbox in Shelf, the “Cachette” to hide sensitive applications, and its OnePlus Switch migration utility.
The fingerprint sensor housed within the OnePlus 7T display is still as responsive as facial recognition.
Although it is less impressive than the OnePlus 7 Pro display because of its notch, the OnePlus 7T display is still very convincing. With a refresh rate of 90 Hz, it benefits from an extraordinary fluidity. It improves the visual comfort of the user and will be perfectly suitable for lovers of videos or games in Ultra High Definition.
Moreover, gamers will appreciate the arrival of a Game Space. In this space, you will be able to add your different game applications and adjust many parameters that should improve your experience during the game:
- Improved tactile feedback
- Smart switch to the best network
- Graphics optimization
- Fnatic Mode
Audio and network
In this area, the smartphone is doing well. The microphone is able to reduce ambient noise during calls or voice recordings. The OnePlus 7T is equipped with powerful speakers capable of delivering a Dolby Atmos experience. Moreover, the distribution of sounds is rather well managed. The user does have this 360° sound feeling. Purists will notice the lack of gouache in the lowest sounds transcribed by the OnePlus 7T, but this is only a detail.
Finally, like its predecessors, the smartphone does not have a jack output. You will therefore need a C-type adapter – Jack or a Bluetooth headset.
Network question, here again, no worries to be made on 4G, regardless of the operator (in France). The smartphone is compatible with 4G frequencies used by Free, SFR, Bouygues and Orange operators. We did not experience any dropouts during our tests and benefited from excellent call quality (clear and audible voices despite the ambient noise).
Is OnePlus7T a good photophone?
With the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Chinese brand has proven that it can offer a more than convincing Photo experience to users. However, it still has a long way to go to catch up with the leaders in the sector: Samsung and Huawei (still them). Let’s see if the OnePlus 7T allows him to progress in this field.
As a reminder, the smartphone has three devices on the back:
- A 48 Megapixel f/1.6 main camera
- A 12 Megapixel f/2.2 telephoto lens
- A 16 Megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle sensor with optical stabilizer
At the front, it is based on a 16 Megapixel sensor. The latter is also very effective for outdoor shots, in portrait or classic photo mode. In low light, things get complicated. The software processing seems less efficient, the photos seem too smooth and the colors less accurate.

The Portrait function applied to the rear camera is also less effective in low light conditions. OnePlus would benefit from being inspired by the Google Camera application that provides amazing results in this type of situation.
As for the classic low-light photo function, it does quite well, especially outdoors with urban landscapes thanks to the HDR mode which adds a little more dive.
The manufacturer has nevertheless tried to solve the problems in low light by improving the night landscape mode, which gives more than correct results outdoors. The proof in pictures:
Professional Mode (default setting)
Night Landscape Mode activated (without flash)
Night Landscape Mode enabled (without flash)
The Super Macro mode of the OnePlus 7T will allow you to make close-ups of very good quality. Of course, you can use the professional mode for your close-up photos, but the Super Macro mode allows you to get convincing results faster: the colors are more vivid and the contours are sharper.
On the left, the classic photo mode, on the right, the Super Macro mode
The triple rear sensor and software manage to manage backlit images well. Again, you get sharp contours with a nice depth of field, all with far fewer burns than a normal smartphone.
The zoom of the OnePlus 7T is also quite efficient but not as powerful and accurate as its competitors.
On the left, the classic photo function, in the middle the 5x zoom, on the right the 10x zoom
The OnePlus 7T camera features “extended landscape” shortcuts that allow you to switch between the three sensors (ultra wide angle, telephoto or main camera) depending on the landscapes you want to take a picture of and the elements you want to focus on.

There is no photo: OnePlus has made further progress in the field of photography. OnePlus 7T offers an enriched and balanced experience that will suit all types of users despite its few shortcomings at nightfall.

Video: simplicity and efficiency
The OnePlus 7T allows you to shoot high quality 1080p and 4K videos (30 and 60 FPS). Note, however, that the Super Stable mode, which is supposed to improve stabilization, only applies to 1080p videos. We noticed image distortion on some elements using this feature that doesn’t seem to be fully developed.
Note that it is impossible to downgrade to 720p or film in this resolution to reduce the size of the output files with the native application.
OnePlus 7T is also able to make good slow-motion thanks to the Super Slow Motion function in 1080p 240 FPS, 720p 480 FPS. The manufacturer has indicated that the 720p 960FPS functionality will be implemented in a future update whose date has not yet been released.
The smartphone has its own editor to cut videos, apply filters and add natively integrated sound backgrounds. However, it is not possible to add your own music as background music.
OnePlus 7T: XXL performance
The device is equipped with the latest generation of high-end Snapdragon processors. This is the Qualcomm® chip Snapdragon™ 855 Plus. With this 7nm engraved processor that has 8 cores based on 8GB of RAM, OnePlus 7T guarantees you an ultra smooth user experience at all levels. The graphics chip of the OnePlus 7T delivered with the Snapdragon 855+ processor is the Adreno 640: the best in the market today.
In terms of pure performance, OnePlus 7T is a monster, it is designed for mobile gaming and heavy applications. We didn’t notice any abnormal overheating or lags during our multiple game sessions on greedy applications (FIFA 20, Call Of Duty Mobile).
The Fnatic mode is automatically activated. It is expected to allocate more resources to the application being used by reducing the consumption of applications in the background. Quite honestly, we didn’t feel any differences when activating the options: improving tactile feedback or optimizing graphics.
One thing is for sure, with such a smartphone, you can easily activate the most advanced visual parameters of your various games to fully enjoy them.
We also submitted the OnePlus 7T to the Antutu and 3DMark benchmarks. On Antutu, our model scores 394559, which puts it in second place among the most powerful smartphones, just behind ROG Phone 2 (396813 points), which also has a Snapdragon 855+. On 3DMark, our OnePlus 7T scores 6253 in the Sling Shot Extreme (Open GL) test.
OnePlus 7T: A very good range
The battery of the OnePlus 7T has a capacity of 3800 mAh. Despite its very high quality display, the device has a very good autonomy. You can use it to its full potential by playing, taking pictures/videos, watching movies/series without worrying about your battery at the end of the day. The latter can last between one and a half and two days depending on your use.
As far as charging is concerned, the OP7T is compatible with the very fast 30T Warp Charge (30 Watts/ 6 amps). OnePlus promises a 70% recharge in 30 minutes. Half an hour was enough for our test model to recharge at 68%. To fully recharge your battery, allow a good hour. The 7T is excellent on this point. Some will blame the brand (once again) for the absence of wireless charging, which has already become a standard among competitors.
Our opinion on the OnePlus 7T
With its fast charging, good range, smooth display, elegant design and Android 10, the OnePlus 7T is clearly a very good high-end smartphone. It excels in all areas and guarantees you a most satisfying user experience in your daily life. Given its performance, it is difficult to imagine it simply as a showman for the Pro model, which will be unveiled on October 10.
The photo part can certainly be improved, but the small pitfalls raised depend above all on the software, which still allows you to obtain good shots with automatic settings. On this point, OnePlus is really on the right track and does not fare badly against its very high-end competitors at Samsung or Huawei.
However, it is still early to say that OnePlus 7T is the champion of value for money. The Chinese manufacturer has not yet disclosed its European price. The 7T is sold from 37,999 rupees in India, or 490 euros. With the addition of taxes, we can expect a final price of less than 600 euros. At this price, it will still be an alternative of choice. The OnePlus 7T will be available on October 17 in regular stores.
