Windows 10: migration is always possible, here is how to proceedPublished on
Although the migration offer for Windows 7 and 8 has normally been completed two years ago, it still seems possible to upgrade to the latest version of the operating system. A user on Reddit explained the procedure and even received an amazing answer from a Microsoft executive.
After the announcement of Windows 10, Microsoft indicated that users with versions 7 and 8.1 could migrate for free. However, this generous offer was limited in time and was only to last until December 2017.
In early 2018, Microsoft announced that it was still possible to migrate for free until January 16. It seems that all his announcements were lies since a Reddit user confirmed that migrations were still possible and free. We will explain how to proceed.
Migrate from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10 for free
To do this, you will need two essential things:
- An official Windows 7 or 8.1 license.
- The “Windows 10 Upgrade Wizard” software installed on the PC you want to migrate.
First, we recommend that you store your most important files on an external hard drive or USB key. The software normally allows you to keep your personal files, but you can never be too careful.
Then run the upgrade program to have it search for the latest version of Windows 10. You should be able to select the “Upgrade this PC” option.
A purely marketing upgrade
If the post Reddit indicating the availability of the update is interesting, one of his answers is more interesting.
The member entitled “CokeRobot” presents himself as a Microsoft employee. He then said: “I have been working at Microsoft since the deployment of Windows 10. This whole “free updates” thing is just a marketing element. Once the famous date had passed, it was indicated that the next migrations would all be charged.”
However, he continues and warns against free migration: “You can still do it without any worries. Be careful, however, do the migration by not keeping any of your files and you will lose the free migration. Migration always allows you to start from scratch once it is done, so don’t worry if you want to delete everything later.”
It is strongly recommended to keep your files during the upgrade. You can delete them later.
We remind our readers that it is strongly recommended to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, especially if you still have version 7. The latter is no longer supported by 2020.
