Ortho ! Le jeu de l’orthographe
Ortho! The spelling game is an educational freeware for children, which aims to help them master spelling in a fun way.
Operation : During a game, the computer will say words aloud, which the child will have to write. In order to help the child understand each word, the software will repeat it, but within an example sentence, if the word is poorly written, the software will remember it, and ask again later.
Learning: Ortho ! therefore allows learning spelling, but can also help in learning rules such as “where” and “or”, “to” and “a”, the agreement of adjectives, conjugation…
Indeed, these different learning can be done when the software pronounces these sentences aloud:
- Write “bucket” in “it fills its (bucket) with sand” (allows you to work on spelling)
- Write “where” in: “the country (where) I live” (allows you to work on the rule where / or)
- Write “to” in: “you arrive (at) time” (allows you to work on the rule at / a)
- Write “useful” in: “these educational software programs are (useful)” (allows you to work on the agreement of adjectives)
- Write “arrive” in: “you (arrive) in time.” (allows to work on the conjugation)
Beyond the simple learning of spelling, the child will also progress in the chords of adjectives, conjugation, the many rules of French…
Statistics: The scores are kept, in order to motivate progress by improving your record. But each word played is also stored in the player’s profile, with the number of times the word was right or wrongly spelled. You will be able to consult these statistics in order to evaluate the player’s progress and difficulties.
But these statistics are also used by the software when it chooses the next word that will be requested: words that the player has previously misspelled will be preferred.
Customization: Ortho! allows you to customize several parameters, such as the duration of a game, or the display on the screen for a fraction of a second of the spoken word you are writing.
But most importantly, Ortho! allows you to use your own word lists. Thus, if the child has to work on a specific list given by his teacher, it is possible to create this specific list, and to use only it.
Origin: This software was born from practice, seeing children learn the word lists given by their teachers. It provides a real learning aid, and avoids the child having to use laborious learning techniques such as copying the same word many times on a sheet of paper to learn it, or memorizing isolated words out of context.
